Donald “Dokes” J. Maheady, a guest at St. Therese Residence, Meade Street, Wilkes - Barre and formerly of Chestnut Avenue, Kingston, passed away Tuesday May 29, 2018 in Wilkes- Barre General Hospital. Born November 7, 1929, in Ashley, Dokes was the son of the late Thomas and Sarah Hughes Maheady.  He attended St. Leo’s grade school, Ashley, and was a graduate of Hanover Area High School.  A  United States Navy Veteran of the Korean conflict, he was assigned to the battleship USS Iowa.  Dokes was employed as manager of the former American Auto stores and later employed by Home Fuel Corporation. Dokes was a parishioner of St. Ignatius Loyola Church, Kingston, and was a member of the Holy Name Society. He was also a member of the former Bishop O’Reilly High School, Father’s Club, and was an avid fan of Villanova University basketball and the Boston Red Sox. Dokes loved to sing, tend to his vegetable garden, and work out at the Kingston Recreation Center. He and his wife, the former Katherine Moran, recently celebrated 62 years of marriage. He was preceded in death by brothers, Lawrence, Thomas, John, and Leo Maheady, and a sister, Audrey Temprine. He is survived by his sister, Lorraine Bilski, of Ashley. Also surviving are children, Joseph  Maheady, Thomas  (Catherine ) Maheady, Marguerite (Thomas ) Cherry,  James Maheady,  Maureen  (Scott ) Brady, grandchildren; Joseph (Brianne) and Sarah Maheady; Keith and Katherine Cherry; Kayla, Sean, Colleen, and Allison Brady; one great-grandson, Joshua Maheady; ;  several  nieces, nephews. The Maheady family would like to thank the staff of St. Therese Residence, Little Flower Manor and Wilkes-Barre General Hospital 8East and 2East nursing staff  for their compassionate care provided for Dokes. Friends and relatives are cordially invited to a visitation with the family,  from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Hugh P. Boyle & Son Funeral Home, Inc. 416 Wyoming Avenue, Kingston. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9 a.m. Friday in the chapel at Little Flower Manor, 200 Meade St., Wilkes-Barre, with Rev. Richard Ghezzi as celebrant. Internment will follow the Mass in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Hanover Township.
